Volunteers and Pilots

Young Eagles events depend on chapter members, pilots, and ground volunteers. Pilots are important, but they are not the only volunteers needed. Ground support, registration help, parent check-in, youth supervision, event setup, hospitality, and general organization all help make a Young Eagles event safe and successful.

Chapter members who want to help should let chapter leadership know their name, EAA number, whether they are interested in flying or ground support, and whether they have completed the required EAA Youth Protection training and background check if applicable.

Youth Protection and Event Support

EAA requires youth protection standards for certain Young Eagles roles, including pilots, coordinators, field representatives, and two-deep leadership supervisors. Some ground volunteers may also be encouraged or required to complete training depending on their role.

Parents and legal guardians may also volunteer, but when serving as Young Eagles volunteers, they are subject to the same youth protection standards that apply to other volunteers.

Volunteer Pilot Information

Young Eagles pilots must meet EAA and FAA requirements before flying Young Eagles participants. These requirements are designed to protect the youth participant, the pilot, the aircraft owner, and the chapter.

To fly passengers in the EAA Young Eagles program, a pilot must generally:

• Be a current member of EAA National.
• Complete the EAA Youth Protection Program, including required training and background check.
• Hold a valid airman certificate, sport pilot or higher.
• Possess a current medical certificate or BasicMed, if applicable.
• Be current to carry passengers in the aircraft being used.
• Have a current flight review.
• Conduct flights in an aircraft that is in airworthy condition.
• Have aircraft passenger liability insurance for the aircraft used, whether owned, rented, or borrowed.
• Follow all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations.
• Complete the required Young Eagles registration form before the flight, signed by the pilot and a parent or legal guardian.

Pilots should confirm current EAA requirements directly before participating, since national program requirements may change.
